Whiskey is a fine drink, enjoyed by many people, who seems to be getting more and more popular each day. This drink has some history behind it and has been celebrated over the years under various forms. Some of the best way to rejoice this special alcoholic beverage was creating songs about whiskey and with its name in the title. Hence, here is a list of some of the most inspirational, successful and famous such songs:
• The Doors are one of the most famous bands of all time; the departure of Jim Morrison, its lead singer, from this world, has left countless teenagers heartbroken but has also inspired movies and tracks. Hence, no wonder than the “Alabama Song (Whisky Bar)” became so popular in 1966, thou the original dates from 1927.
• “Whiskey in the Jar” is a song mostly associated with Metallica nowadays, thou, originally, it is an Irish traditional song, from the mountain area, who rose to fame in the 1960s, thanks to the band The Dubliners.
• Willie Nelson is a respected name in the world of country music, which can easily be associated with whiskey; which is probably why he released in 1973 “Whiskey River”, one of his biggest hits to date.
• The biggest hit Asleep at the Wheel had was about whiskey, and not just any whiskey, but one of the best: Johnnie Walker; the band released in 1975 “Letter that Johnny Walker Read”.
• Back in 1978 Gary Stewart released “Whiskey Trip”, a sad drinking song which fit with his personality of a man fighting alcoholism and drug abuse.
• Hank Williams Jr. released in 1979 “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound”.
• Jack Daniels has always been one of the preferred brands of whiskey for many persons, famous or not. And, David Allan Coe decide to praise it, in a song released in 1979, called “Jack Daniels, if you please”
• Van Halen released “Take your whiskey home” in 1980.
• In 1983 Merle Haggard and George Jones released, perhaps, the best known and appreciated songs about whiskey, meaning “C.C.Waterback”. This record has defined the history of songs about alcohol and whiskey, in particular.
• George Jones reprised in 1983 “Tennessee Whiskey”, the song first released in 1981 by David Allan Goe, but which had much more success in Jones’ portrayal.
• Highway 101 released in 1987 “Whiskey, if you were a woman”, which, despite the title, is mostly a sad song.
• And because George Jones could never get enough of his passion for alcohol, he released in 1989 “The King is Gone (So are you)”, a song written by Roger Ferris.
• Travis Tritt and Marty Stuard seemed to be upset back in 1991 that “The whiskey ain’t workin’”.
• Bright Eyes recorded “Well Whiskey” in 2004.
• Corb Lund released in 2009 a song called “Rye Whiskey/Time to Switch to whiskey”.
